What direction is U.S. foreign policy taking under a second Trump administration?
This session examines how a renewed “America First” approach is affecting alliances such as NATO, relations with China and Russia, U.S. policy toward Ukraine and the Middle East, and America’s role in international institutions. We’ll also consider trade policy, economic competition, immigration, and the use of executive power in shaping foreign affairs.
Join us for an informed and thoughtful discussion about the impact President Trump‘s 2.0 foreign policy is having on America’s role in a rapidly changing world.
Our speaker for this program is Anne Linnee. Following a more than 20-year career as a U.S. Foreign Service Officer, Anne retired from the State Department in 2023. During her career she primarily worked on issues in, and related to, Africa and Asia. Her overseas assignments included the United Arab Emirates, Afghanistan, China, Pakistan, Mauritania and South Africa, as well as Washington, DC. Her final assignment was as the U.S. Consul General in Durban, South Africa.

Join us for our own Moth Radio Hour when members Sam & Sylvia Kaplan, Pat Fontaine and Peggy Reinhardt share their stories with you.
Also, consider sharing one of your own personal stories that have left a lasting impression on your lives in the months. We’ve already scheduled another for June but consider a summer or fall program. These reflections—sometimes surprising, sometimes poignant or humorous—can offer a glimpse into the moments that shape who you are. Perhaps your story inspired you to change direction at that time or made you smile or cry when you think back to that time. Maybe it’s about an intention you have for the future. Their stories may spark memories of your own or even inspire you to put pen to paper.
Come to listen, reflect, and connect. Feel free to contact Jane Stacy or Sonia Cairns, soniamcairns@gmail.com if you want to participate in a future storytelling event.

Enjoy this month‘s reading of "Little Women," adapted by Lauren M. Gunderson from the novel by Louisa May Alcott (Guthrie).
Jo March desperately wants to be a writer - an unusual dream for a teenage girl in the 1860‘s Massachusetts. With her father away during the Civil War, Jo and sisters Meg, Beth and Amy, at home with their mother Marmee, remain joyful and dutiful despite their modest circumstances. As time passes, the women in the family grow ever closer as they navigate love, loss and new beginnings. Yearning for independence, Jo is emboldened by her sisters to channel her angst into her stories, eventually finding her place in the world as a published author. This new adaptation of the beloved classic celebrates the wonderful and trying transition from girlhood to adulthood.

We‘ll meet on one Friday morning a month from 9:30-11:00. Join us on April 24th for the first session and help shape the conversations to come.

You too could be a Justice of the Supreme Court as it decides who can be a U.S. citizen!
Every year the Supreme Court issues important rulings that affect our lives. The nine justices read briefs, listen to the argument, and then render a decision. Now you can do much the same. On April 1 the Court heard one of its most important and controversial cases - the case about Birthright Citizenship.
The case is important because the Trump administration is asking the Court to overturn what has been a core principle of our country – that children born in the United States are citizens.
We will meet on Wednesday, May 6 at the Mill City Commons offices to consider the arguments and vote on how we would decide the case. At the end of the Court’s term in June we will find out how we did. (The last 2 cases that we considered we got RIGHT!) YOU DO NOT NEED TO BE A LAWYER to fully participate. You just need to be willing to read up on the case in advance, listen to the recording of the actual oral argument, consider the points on both sides, and decide with us on May 6 what you think the court should do. It will be fun and engaging.
Once you register, Peter Hutchinson, who will facilitate the discussion, will send you details about the case and how to listen in to the oral argument.

Join us for a powerful evening of film and conversation as the MCC Native American Programming Workgroup and Abiitan co-host a screening of "Ohiyesa: The Soul of an Indian."
"Ohiyesa: The Soul of an Indian" is a deeply personal family film that follows Kate Beane, an urban, Dakota scholar, and her family as they trace the remarkable life of their celebrated relative, Ohiyesa (Charles Eastman), an important author, activist, lecturer and one of the first Native American doctors. Along the way, Beane uncovers uncanny parallels between their lives, though they were born more than 100 years apart.
Following the screening, we will gather for a 30-minute discussion to reflect on the film’s themes and explore its relevance today. We hope you’ll join us for this opportunity to learn, connect, and deepen our understanding of Native American history and ongoing efforts for justice.
There is on-street metered parking available. All registrants must check in and out at the concierge desk. Abiitan recommends arriving 15 minutes early.

Now they‘re both on marriage number two and honeymooning at a popular resort town in France with their new spouses, Sibyl and Victor, who remain unconvinced that the flames between the former dynamic duo have fizzled. When the couples discover they are vacationing at the same hotel, insults and romantic sparks fly until everyone is caught in the emotional crossfire and forced to follow their hearts. This delicious will-they-won‘t they comedy will have you rooting for the lovers and leave you laughing the whole way home.

The United States and China remain locked in a complex relationship defined by deep economic ties and growing strategic rivalry. Relations continue to be strained by tariffs, rapid military modernization, and rising tensions over Taiwan, even as both countries remain interconnected through global trade and institutions.
In this session, we will explore key questions shaping the future of U.S.–China relations, including competition for technological leadership, supply-chain security, and the balance of power in the Indo-Pacific. We will also consider whether a renewed Trump administration would pursue a coherent China policy, whether tariffs on rare earth minerals could be effective, and what strategic options are available to the United States.

If you are a reader/listener of thoughtful investigative and critical journalism from magazine and newspaper articles and podcasts, please join MCC member Melinda Ward once a month for Mix of Minds, a ninety minute discussion of a recent article proposed by a member of the group. This will be like a book group but focus on shorter pieces that generate interesting questions and thoughtful conversation from a wide variety of sources such as The New Yorker, The Atlantic or The Economist, etc.
We‘ll send the article or podcast link out 2 weeks before meeting so that participants can submit questions beforehand. Melinda will lead the first one or two sessions but then ask for recommendations from the group. This is a good way to learn about new topics and sources that you may have missed. We‘ll meet on one Friday morning a month from 9:30 - 11:00 am.
