About this event

U.S. alliance skepticism may drive countries like Japan and South Korea to reconsider nuclear options. What are the implications of the Trump administration’s rethinking of the U.S. alliance system for regional and global security? Will this new uncertainty alter the way allies and rivals in various regions make decisions about security and nuclear weapons?

Our speaker for this program is Alan Carlson. Alan retired from the US State Department in 2012 after a 25 year career as a Foreign Service Officer (diplomat). He was posted overseas in Copenhagen, Kingston (Jamaica), Sarajevo, Podgorica (Montenegro), and Geneva (UN/Conference on Disarmament). As a specialist in political-military matters, he was extensively involved in nonproliferation, arms control and disarmament issues, including being an advisor to US delegations on the Limited Test Ban Treaty (LTBT), the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty (NPT), and the 2010 New START Treaty. He has a B.A. (History) and J.D. (law) from the University of Minnesota, Diploma from the Command & Staff College (Quantico), and a Masters of Military Studies from the Marine Corps University. He lives in Stillwater with his wife Tessa.
