About this event
Let’s celebrate, Native American style! We will join with the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community and representatives from Native tribes across the country at their annual Wacipi (powwow). The Natives tell us that the gathering is a time to preserve their heritage while connecting with old and new friends. We will arrive at 1:00 for the Grand Entry as a Native American color guard, tribal royalty and hundreds of dancers in traditional regalia enter the arena. Following the Entry, dancers, singers and drummers of all ages will compete for honors.
At our leisure, we can browse the Native American artists and crafters displaying their beadwork, jewelry and handmade goods. Hungry? We can partake in authentic meals and treats at the Wacipi. The afternoon of celebration will be a special way of honoring and supporting our Native neighbors.
We will leave the Red Cross parking lot at 11:30. Golf carts take us from the tribe’s parking lot to the arena. Return time will be up to individuals in each car.
We encourage each attendee to be mindful of the etiquette guidelines. Please read the following before the event: https://www.smscwacipi.org/about/. To learn more about the vendors and dance styles, see: https://www.smscwacipi.org/news/.
For those unable to attend the event on Saturday the Wacipi will run from Friday evening through Sunday. it can be livestreamed on https://smscwacipi.org.
Please answer the question on whether you would like to carpool and if you would be willing to drive. We anticipate staying for up to 2.5 hours but individual carpools will be able to determine the exact length of stay.
